The World’s Largest Private Whiskey Collection Is Up For Auction

Totaling 9,000 bottles and 2,000-plus miniatures, Pat’s Whiskey Collection is the single largest private collection of whiskeys ever brought to auction.

Hosted by Whisky Auctioneer, the auction is live now, but it ends October 5, so you’ll want to peruse those bottles soon. If you’re unable to snag something you want, don’t fret—additional bottles will periodically go up for bid between now and June 2021 to spotlight special bottles in the collection.

Pat’s Whiskey Collection is the result of 15 years of meticulous sourcing by the collector. He went from a novice to a true enthusiast, amassing an enviable compilation of drams from around the world. Many hail from obvious locales like Scotland, Ireland and the United States (more than 150 Scottish distilleries are accounted for), but dozens of countries are represented.

The collection features sought-after bottles from Japanese distilleries Karuizawa, Yamazaki, and Hanyu; there are whiskeys from Kavalan Distillery in Taiwan; and you can score expressions from Penderyn distillery in Wales and Mackmyra, the first whiskey distillery in Sweden.

“I have always fought against whisky snobbery and wanted to create a collection for drinking and enjoying responsibly,” said the owner, known simply as Pat. “Good whisky can be discovered literally anywhere and come at any price, wherein lies its beauty.”

Some of the most treasured bottles in the collection are rare releases from small distilleries and sought-after independent bottlers like Duncan Taylor, as well as limited-edition series. If you want to drop a mortgage on the 72-year-old Macallan in a Lalique decanter, or a trio of 1986-1988 sherry-aged Karuizawa whiskies, you can. But you’ll also find affordably priced bottles, where bidding starts as low as $15.

“The entire collection has an estimated hammer price of approximately $5 million, however the focus for starting the project was never on ultra premium priced whiskies,” said Iain McClune, the founder of Whisky Auctioneer. “The value of the collection lies in its completeness, with many of the most lauded series from some of the finest distilleries in the world featured here in their entirety.”

If you’re a serious whiskey drinker who wants to secure some interesting bottles for your personal collection, this auction is a great place to start. Many of the spirits aren’t available on store shelves, and while some can be found on the secondary market, they likely won’t be paired with their in-series siblings.

“The significance of this wide range of whisky styles, from single malts to grain and blends, is that it’s unlikely anybody will ever be able to replicate such a collection on the open market without directly acquiring large private collections,” said Pat. “Many bottles included will simply never or at least rarely be available again. I was fortunate to start my collection at the time I did.”

To browse the collection and place bids, you’ll need to register on Whisky Auctioneer. Bids close on October 5 at 2 pm EDT.
