United’s youngsters went on to win 5-4 on spot-kicks after a goalless draw, with Harrison Hopper missing the critical death penalty in sudden death.
Chelsea U21s have won after a 1-1 draw at Walsall on penalties. Early in the second half, Wes McDonald gave Walsall the lead before Dynel Simeu levelled for the Blues, who went on to win 5-3 in the shootout.
Elsewhere, at Tranmere, there was a loss to Liverpool U21s, with Rovers winning 3-2, and Crewe winning 1-0 over Newcastle U21s.
At Colchester, West Ham U21s grabbed a 1-0 victory, while Manchester City U21s thumped Scunthorpe 4-0 away.
James Wilson, meanwhile, scored as Salford defeated Morecambe 2-0.
